Apple Chips Two Ways

Food· Snacks

It is funny how we take things for granted sometimes. Moving into my house in the suburbs I discovered a wonderful bonus in the backyard- the neighbors directly behind me have a fabulous old apple tree but for some reason they never picked ANY of the apples. Literally just had rotting apples everywhere. This meant lots of treats for the…

Letters to the Universe: Abuse and Empathy

Wellness

I write what I call ‘Letters to the Universe’ in my journal when I am so emotional that I need to let it out, to articulate what I’m feeling in words so that I can release it and unburden myself. It is not written to a particular person, but rather to the collective “you,” a way to address the universe…

Handmade Pumpkin Pasta (Zero Waste)

Food· Lunch and Dinner

The kitchen is one of my happy places. Whether I’m having a bad day or a great one, I love the feeling of standing in front of a mise en place of incredible ingredients and making art. When I was younger I read a novel in which the main character cooks with her own innate magic infused into her dishes…

It is all pumpkin all the time over here in the Modern Hippie household! I’ve been cooking up an autumn storm and have pumpkin all over myself, my kitchen, my backyard for the chickens, and of course in the dog bowls! You know that I love being able to create as little waste as I can both in packaging and…

Simple Roasted Pumpkin Puree

Food

We are in the midst of October which means, PUMPKIN SEASON! Now, I love pumpkin year round, but as with most foods, it just tastes a little better when it is in season. Plus, having the ability to pop an entire pumpkin, almost fully intact, into the oven and have it come out tasting like the epitome of comfort food…

Let’s make body butter! 🌱 Ingredients: 2 O Let’s make body butter! 🌱

Ingredients:

2 Ounces Shea Butter
2 Ounces Coconut Oil
2 Ounces Sweet Almond Oil
30 Drops Essential Oils

If you have allergies or sensitivities, you can swap these oils for ones that work with your body. Just made sure you keep the 2:1 ratio for solid oils to liquid oils. One of my favorites to swap for coconut is mango butter, and I love avocado oil for the sweet almond!

Instructions:

Add all oils into a bowl and wish until fluffy and it forms stable peaks. The oils should double in size. This isn’t the most uniform way to make body butter; if you want to make sure that the oils are dispersed perfectly, melt all oils together using a double boiler, stir well, refrigerate overnight, and then whisk.

Store in airtight jars in a cool space- I love the fridge! This will last about 3 months.

Let’s talk five beginner gardening mistakes! F Let’s talk five beginner gardening mistakes!

Five Beginner Gardening Mistakes To Avoid:

1. Starting too big! Use a smaller plot to learn about pest control, soil composition, weeds, and light! ☀️

2. Not having a plan. Having a planting plan based on your hardiness zone is key! You’ll choose your types of plants, whether to buy seeds or seedlings, etc based on this plan. 🧊

3. Choosing plants without research. Hardiness, sun, water, and much more affect how plants will thrive. Make sure you are grabbing plants fit for your specific garden. @otoolesgardencenters employees are a GREAT resource for choosing plants that will work for you! 👩‍🌾

4. Not utilizing companion planting to maximize space and yield. 🥕

5. Direct planting mint! Specific, I know, but mint invades EVERYTHING! Plant it in a pot!

Let’s preserve bananas! 🍌 🍌 To dehydrate Let’s preserve bananas! 🍌

🍌 To dehydrate: slice thinly and place on either dehydrator sheets or a lined baking sheet. Dehydrate about 8-10 hours on the ‘fruit’ setting. Or 1-2 hours in your oven on its lowest setting until you can feel the chips snap in your hands. This same goes for the peel! I dehydrate everything all in one batch.

🍌 To Freeze: Either place whole bananas, peel on, in a freezer sage bag and freeze or pre-prep bananas for smoothies or baking uses by cutting them into chunks or quarters and freezing them overnight on a lined baking sheet. Transfer to a freezer safe bag (I use @stasherbag )

🍌 🫖: For banana peel tea steep about a teaspoon (3-4 peels) of dehydrated banana peel in boiling water for ten minutes and drink before bed.

🍌 For Fertilizer: Pack a clean jar with banana peel and cover with water. Let sit for about a week and use as a potassium-rich fertilizer for plants.
