Earth Month: Let’s Look Beyond!

With Earth Month coming to a close, I know most of us are more excited than ever to continue to create positive change for the planet. We’ve spent the month discovering new products, new processes and new environmentalists whose work we’d love to follow. But with so much new information rattling around in our heads, it sometimes can be hard to determine what we’d like to focus on- there is so much we can do but doing everything all at once is impossible! So I’d love to challenge you to pick three areas of conservation or sustainability to focus on for the next month (or six!) And you won’t be alone! I’ve chosen my three planet-friendly tasks as well!

Create Less Waste

For years I had been slowly whittling down my trash production, and finding more and more areas in which I could reduce the amount of packaging I brought into my home. However, when the pandemic hit everything changed. This past year many places where I sought out low to zero waste products had to change the ways they did business to accommodate health and safety to slow the spread of the virus. This unfortunately meant that many of the ways I found to reduce trash were no longer viable options. However, with the growing season on the way I am SO excited to hop back into the farmer’s market world and be able to bring my own produce bags and the like to grab groceries without the plastic!

I’m also ready to get started in my garden- growing your own food is SUCH a wonderful way to create less waste as well! I know not everyone has access to land to grow food, but there are SO many fun things you can grow on just a windowsill- I actually have a video about growing food scraps! You could also shop thinking in bulk- the larger of a container you can purchase without the food going bad, the better! Food packaging is a big issue in my life, but take a glance at your own habits and see what makes the most sense for you!

Support Innovative, Sustainable Companies

An easy way to continue to support the planet is to purchase from companies who are actively evolving their products and their manufacturing standards to be more sustainable and eco-friendly. There are innovative companies across all verticals of thought that are making a difference- from coffee cups you can plant afterward to packing peanuts made of mushrooms! One of my favorite companies that is doing just this is Adidas! I have loved Adidas for years to the point that I am an ambassador for them, and the way that they have evolved to create a difference in the athletic space is amazing.

My favorite sneakers right now are my collection of Adidas Ultraboosts– they have a gorgeous new non-dyed version that I CANNOT wait to get my hands on! Made with what Adidas calls ‘Primeblue’ which is a high-performance recycled material made in part with Parley Ocean Plastic- 50% of the upper is textile, 75% of the textile is Primeblue yarn and it uses no virgin polyester! They’re great for me while running and great for the environment! However, their sneakers are not the only things that are made from better ingredients. Everything from their Face Covers (I’ll be wearing these at the gym- yay being fully vaccinated!) To their super comfortable Aeroknit bra and Training Tights are made from their Primegreen recycled, high performance materials! Great gear, great price, and amazing for the planet!

Do Your Research!

There is SO much conflicting information out there about what is the ‘right’ way to go about living a sustainable life. So, doing your own research to see how you can live in a way that is best for you and the planet is important! One of the books that I have been making my way through (it is DENSE but incredibly interesting!) Is Drawdown by Paul Hawken. Its a painstakingly researched overview of ways to help restore our planet to its former glory without having to drastically change our daily lives. It talks about everything from chocolate to energy usage and everything in between. So I’d love to see you choose a book or books to dive into and learn something fun and useful! Maybe its a book about recycling, farming, how solar energy work, or your favorite endangered animal and how we can improve its habitat- the type of book doesn’t matter, but let’s get reading!

I would LOVE to know what you choose to focus on, let me know over on Instagram! I’ll be sporting some fun Adidas gear while getting my garden ready for spring! All opinions are my own.
