Whipped Rose Body Scrub

I love a good body scrub, but I do tend to have very sensitive skin. So, in the middle of winter when the temperature oscillates between ‘just; cold and frigid, and there is an intense lack of humidity here in the mountain states, I need something that will fix my alligator legs without causing issues with my sensitivity! I normally love a simple sugar scrub in the summer because they are so gentle, but this winter skin requires a little more *oomph* so adding salt in is necessary. But we balance out that harsher salt with lots of moisture!

Now, when it comes to skin care, even something that is relatively universal like a body scrub, I feel like it is incredibly necessary to have options. No two humans’ skin is the same, and it is an integral part of our health! So, I’ve built in plenty of swaps in this body scrub recipe- so while you’ll get the same result you can tailor it to your body!

Whipped Rose Body Scrub Ingredients

1 Cup Sugar (Organic, unbleached)
½ Cup Shea Butter*
½ Cup Avocado Oil*
¼ Cup Fine Sea Salt (I used Himalayan)
½ Cup Rose Petals**
20-30 Drops Essential Oils*** (Optional)

Substitutions:

  • When it comes to oils, I know that there can be lots of allergies! While shea butter and avocado oil are my favorite oils when it comes to this recipe, the oils can be substituted, based on their state of matter (solid versus liquid.)
  • *Shea Butter, which is solid at room temperature, can be switched with other oils that are also solid at room temperature: mango butter, cocoa butter, and coconut oil are good examples. However, their texture in this solid state will affect how the whipped rose body scrub can be stored. Shea, mango, and cocoa are a lot more stable and less affected by temperature than say coconut oil.
  • *Avocado Oil, which is liquid at room temperature, is a lot easier to switch out. It can be switched for any oil that is liquid at room temperature from olive oil to jojoba. Just make sure that whichever oil you choose is safe for your skin!

**Rose Petals: I know people love to save rose petals that they’ve received as gifts from the grocery store! And while they are beautiful, unless they are organic, they’ll be covered in pesticides if sold to big box stores or grocery stores. So, unless you KNOW that your flowers were organic, opt for rose petals that you’ve harvested yourself or that you’ve purchased specifically for body care.

***Essential Oils: Because this is skincare that will *stay* on your skin rather than be completely washed off, make sure you choose essential oils that are both skin-safe and aren’t photo-sensitive (meaning that they can cause a skin reaction when exposed to sunlight.) A (brief) list of common oils that are photosensitive: citrus oils (grapefruit, lemon, wild orange), bergamot, and angelica. My common go-tos for scent that aren’t affected by sunlight on the skin? Rosemary and lavender!

Whipped Rose Body Scrub Method

Add both oils to either a large, sturdy bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer. Whip using a hand mixer or the whisk attachment on high until the oils come together to form a fluffy meringue consistency with stiff peaks.

Slowly add sugar and salt into the mixture, scraping down the sides as you go. The whipped oils will start to look grainy.

Then add in rose petals and essential oils. Mix again to combine well.

Transfer to an airtight container (I love these squat glass jars.) You can either store in the fridge or on the counter for up to 3 months. I prefer to store mine in the fridge so the texture stays thick and the oils melt onto your skin!
