Beet Dog Treats

I love Samoyeds. They’re sweet, smart, curious, and bratty in the best way! I’ve had them all my life, but I’ve never had one with quite the voracious appetite that Meeko does- specifically for things that can stain her beautifully white coat. This dog loves ANYTHING that is brightly colored, and her favorite color for treats? Beet red. This silly little creature will eat beets raw, so for years I’ve avoided that while still catering to her tastes, by making Beet Dog Treats. Once baked you don’t have to worry about color transfer!

Now these are festive for Valentine’s Day, but I make them year-round. You can use whichever cookie cutters you like! Hearts and Bones are my favorite for large sizes, but they are great for training treats as will with tiny circles or little stars! The method is exactly the same!

Beet Dog Treat Ingredients

2 Cups Flour (I use whole wheat, but you can swap for almond flour if your pup is sensitive)
1 Cup Beets
½ Cup Rolled Oats
½ Cup Peanut Butter (Unsweetened)
2 Large Eggs

Beet Dog Treat Method

Preheat the oven to 375º

If you are making your own peanut butter, add peanuts into a food processor and process on high until the butter is shiny and all peanuts are incorporated. Note: I always make more than I think I’ll need because it is great to have on hand! So in the photos this is more than ½ cup of peanuts!

In the same food processor combine the peanut butter, beets (yes, raw! We’ll cook them later) and eggs. Blend until all ingredients are combined well and the mixture is a uniform beet red.

Add in flour and oats and blend again until the mixture is the texture of wet sand.

I know that the mixture currently looks dry, but as you use your hands to knead the dough it comes together. Knead for a minimum of ten minutes until the sandy texture turns to dough and all of the flour is incorporated. The dough will be a beautiful, uniform beet red.

Let chill for 30 minutes.

Roll out to about ¼ inch thick and use cookie cutters of your choice to cut shapes and place them on a lined cookie sheet. I use Silpat or silicone mats, but if you don’t have a reusable mat, parchment works well.

Bake for 20 minutes. The beet dog treats will puff up so they get that crunch that pups love!

Let cool and then store in an airtight container for 2 weeks on the counter or transfer to the freezer for up to six months!
