I like to say that Colorado has three seasons: summer, winter, and mud season, twice. It is funny because being from New England, I always say that Colorado is SO dry, and humidity-wise it is, but in spring and autumn we are constantly inundated with mud. Whether it be snow melt in the spring or our slushy- autumn rain, I feel like for quite a few months a year my floors are covered in muddy paw prints and my shoes need to be left at the door.
Now, mud or not I am still constantly outside. I love to hike in the mountains no matter the weather (we hiked in a sudden snow storm in Rocky Mountain National Park last week and it was such a beautiful, unexpected experience) and I also have plenty of outdoor chores I need to do my own backyard- chickens aren’t the cleanest animals, but they sure are fun! Add the birds and pups to Colorado activities and I am very much so in need of mud gear.
Mud Season Necessities
1 Slip on Wellies.
Slip on boots are so incredibly necessary for me when it comes to working in my backyard. I’m constantly in and out collecting eggs, making sure the birds are alright, playing with my fluffs, and I need something easy and durable. My favorites are the LL Bean Ankle Wellies.
2 Fleece Lined Leggings.
Another thing about mud season here in Colorado is that there are some rather absurd temperature swings! One day it may snow 3-4 inches and the next it is 70 degrees and everything is melting. So when it comes to dressing for the weather layers are key. I love starting out with a thin, fleece lined legging. It gives a bit of coziness and warmth without being too overbearing, and can fit underneath a pair of jeans (or yoga pants!) My favorite pair are from a little store up in Steamboat Springs in the mountains, but I’ve seen them everywhere from Walgreens to The North Face.
3 All The Tea!
Now normally you can see me running around town with multiple giant reusable water bottles in tow, but when it comes to colder weather one of those bottles transitions into a travel mug full of hot lemon water or tea! I have two go-to travel containers, a ceramic handled-beauty from Ello for city living, and a durable stainless mug from Contigo for chucking in my hiking backpack. Usually I stick to just hot water with lemon, but I’ve also been loving the chai bags from Just Tea!
4 Hiking Sneakers
Now, for my ‘out in the mountains’ counterpart to my ankle wellies, a hiking sneaker. While I love a good hiking boot, when it comes to mud season I want something that is easily washable! These durable hiking sneakers from The North Face hold up well to muddy trails and I just pop mine into the washing machine and they are good to go.
5 Rain Jacket
I have plenty of thin, summer rain jackets that are essentially just a waterproof shell, but when it comes to the colder weather of mud seasons I need more of an all-weather jacket like the Apex Flex from The North Face. I need jacket that is both breathable and waterproof, flexible enough to hike but warm enough to stave of winter’s early chill, and both hiking ready and fashionable enough to get away with it in every day life- this Apex fits the bill.
Oh mud season, that fun transition between our more extreme seasons! While it may require a few more pieces of gear they are some of my favorite months of the year. Great article! You’re right about shoes being necessities, without them I’d be muddy and miserable. It never amazes me how many people wear hiking shoes in the mud when they are clearly not hiking. Why not wear wellies? So much easier to clean!
