DIY Deep Sleep Bath Soak
Oh, Sunday evenings. Those glorious few hours as you wind down from the weekend and gear up for the workweek ahead. Now, I am not someone who dreads Mondays (a benefit of being my own boss and loving my job!) but I do appreciate a bit of self-care for those last few hours before work ramps up. #SelfCareSunday is a widely used hashtag on Instagram for a reason!
Lately I’ve been making the time to settle into a bath late in the evening right before bed so I can settle my body down for sleep. To be quite frank, I’ve never been the best sleeper- a night owl to the core (sorry Mom!) I’ve struggled with bouts of insomnia and night terrors for most of my life, so anything I can do to help me sleep is a great thing. When that something is feeling spoiled floating in herbs in my DIY Deep Sleep Bath Soak? I am all for it!
Deep Sleep Bath Soak Ingredients
This ‘recipe’ is a fun one, a blend of greens and flowers- all incredibly fragrant and if you have them you can throw a few crystals in to boot! Whatever you have on hand, toss into your bath in equal parts and you’re good to go!
Hops
Many of us just think ‘beer!’ when it comes to hops but they are also a wonderful sedative as well. Science has proven (seriously, check out this study) that hops can increase sleep time! It is also effective for anxiety and stress. Plus the fun floaty flowers look super cute in your Instagram photo, because aesthetics!
Chamomile Flower
Chamomile is a beautiful daisy-like flower that is both soothing to the central nervous system and is an anti-inflammatory! Plus, steeping chamomile in your bath has so many benefits for your skin; it can fight breakouts, help with dark spots, and its anti-oxidants help your skin feeling young and supple.
Catnip
This is an herb that always makes me laugh because it does the exact opposite for humans that it does for cats. Cats go psycho, humans relax- which is exactly what you want before bed! Catnip, as part of the mint family, is once again soothing for the skin and has anti-aging and a source of anti-oxidants
Rosemary Leaf
Rosemary might seem like an odd choice for a sleep bath, but it is wonderful for helping with anxiety, depression, and it is said to not only aid sleep, but result in vivid dreams! Plus, it aids with circulation; better circulation means more oxygen and more oxygen means a deeper sleep!
Lavender Flower
We all love lavender with its soothing, anti-inflammatory properties that are so well known for calming anxiety and promoting healthy sleep.
Himalayan Sea Salt
Much like epsom salt (but ever so much prettier!) himalayan sea salt helps soothe skin and muscle ache with its high dose of magnesium- an anti-inflammatory mineral.
Crystals
I love adding crystals into baths to infuse the water. (New to crystals and how they work? Check out this post.) For this bed time bath I added in rose quartz for self love and black tourmaline for grounding!
Toss whichever ingredients you have on hand into a hot bath. Not a fan of hot baths in the summer? No worries! Just pop your herbs into the hot water to allow them to steep, and then as the water cools you can step in for yourself! Just make sure that you leave enough room for your body to displace water- you don’t want your herbs all washing away!
Wishing you a long, restful night of sleep! And if you’re scrolling Instagram before bed, say hi! And then put your phone down- off to bed!
