St. Patrick’s Day Dog Treats
In only a few days a little leprechaun is coming to pinch us if we’re not wearing green. So, I thought it would be fun to celebrate a bit early with these very green and very tasty, St. Patrick’s Day Dog Treats. These are not only some green fun, but they also double as a breath freshener thanks to the mint leaves incorporated!
Another thing that makes me very happy when it comes to these treats, is that they use many of the same ingredients as my Superfood Green Smoothie recipe- so, one trip to the grocery store- two stones. However, I do know that spirulina can get a bit pricey, so if you want to opt out of that ingredient for your pup treats- no big deal! They just wont be as green!
Ingredients:
2 1/2 Cups Flour (I used unbleached, whole wheat)
1 1/2 Cups Spinach Leaves
1/2 Cup Mint Leaves
1/2 Cup Peanut Butter (No sugar is best)
2 Large Eggs
1 Tablespoon Spirulina (optional)
Instructions:
1- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2- In a food processor, combine eggs, spinach, and mint leaves. Pulse until combined.
3- Add peanut butter and spirulina to the egg mixture. Pulse until combined and dark green.
4- Slowly incorporate the flour a small bit at a time. I found that this was easier to combine in a bowl with my hands, rather than use my small food processor.
5- Knead the dough until it forms into a ball. If needed you can add a teaspoon of water at a time to help with incorporation.
6- Working with small pieces of dough, use a rolling pin to roll dough out to about a quarter of an inch thick.
7- Use a cookie cutter of your choice (mine is a shamrock for St. Patrick’s Day) to cut out cookies.
8- Place cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving a bit of room for them to expand.
9. Pop the baking sheet into the preheated oven for 20 minutes or until cookies are puffy and cooked through.
10. Remove and let cool.
Enjoy your St. Patrick’s Day Dog Treats!
