As October comes to a close I hope that you have been bombarded (in the best way possible) with information about Fair Trade goods. October is Fair Trade month, but honestly I think every month should be. Fair trade changes lives for the better, and the more aware we are as consumers the better we can shop.
As consumers, sometimes it feels like we go shopping constantly; and with that, we are exposed to an incredible amount of choices. Whether it be at the grocery store, the mall, or online, we are fortunate enough to have to chance to choose what we buy. Why not use that buying power to benefit others while getting high quality products for both you and your family?
So what exactly is Fair Trade? I think the folks at Fair Trade USA say it best, “Fair Trade goods are just that. Fair. From far-away farms to your shopping cart, products that bear our logo come from farmers and workers who are justly compensated. We help farmers in developing countries build sustainable businesses that positively influence their communities. We’re a nonprofit, but we don’t do charity. Instead, we teach disadvantaged communities how to use the free market to their advantage. With Fair Trade USA, the money you spend on day-to-day goods can improve an entire community’s day-to-day lives.”
Pretty awesome right? Before I did my research I didn’t quite understand Fair Trade. I thought the products were more expensive and as a yoga instructor on a budget I was concerned. This wasn’t the case. And as I opened my eyes and started noticing the Fair Trade Logo I realized that some of my favorite products were already Fair Trade!
