It is starting to really feel like spring here in Denver (minus the occasional 20 inches of snow- silly Colorado) and with that comes the necessary post-winter detox. So often we think solely about detoxing our bodies with teas, with food, with the somewhat-torturous juice cleanse, and completely forget about cleansing our homes. Homes that are integral to our feeling of well being. Purging our homes of both stagnant energy and of the layer of winter guck is surprisingly cathartic- there’s a reason that spring cleaning’ is so widespread- and is great for our health.
Spring cleaning sometimes feels like a daunting task, and sometimes it is, but detoxing your home doesn’t have to mean scrubbing the base boards. These 5 ways to naturally detox your home for spring allow for you to reap the rewards of spring cleaning with a lot less work!
Tip 1: Open Your Windows. It is really as simple as that. Fresh air and a nice spring breeze can flush out stagnation and dust and replace the recirculated air that results from our heating units. If it all possible, open windows and doors to create a cross-house draft to really kick up the results!
Tip 2: Use an Essential Oil Diffuser. Essential oils have been used for centuries to purify bodies and spaces. Using a simple essential oil diffuser with a few drops of your favorite oil can not only scent your home, but depending on the oil you use can lead to cleansing benefits. I love the Thieves essential oil from Young Living– named after the oil blend that grave robbers used to avoid the plague in the middle ages- is wonderful for purifying, as is the Purification blend. If you’re not a Young Living fan, (I honestly just use their blends) there are so many other essential oils you can try as well! If you’re here in Denver, pop by Apothecary Tinctura on 6th to pick up a handmade clove essential oil (one of the oils in Thieves) or you can order a few different brands of oils on Amazon! Try out Now oils or Aura Cacia oils for some inexpensive options, clove or sage in either brand will be great!
Tip 3: Use sunshine to your advantage! The sun has amazing purifying and detoxing qualities on its own! When spring comes to be I take my bedding outside to cure in the sun. Pillows, duvet, rugs, pretty much anything that isn’t too in love with the washing machine are great things to beat the dust out of and then let the sun do its thing!
Tip 4: Use sage smoke to remove airborne bacteria from your home. Sage smoke does wonderful things for everything it permeates. While it has been used for ages to purify, especially in Native American rituals, recently there have been a plethora of studies that are proving that sage smoke actually removes airborne bacteria from the air and keeps it away- cleaning the air and preventing sickness? I’m all in. I use a sage smudge stick and a traditional abalone shell to sage my home!
Tip 5: Get rid of items that no longer serve you. I’m not saying that you have to KonMari your whole home, but taking a quick peek through your wardrobe, your kitchen, and your closets to remove anything that gives you negative feelings (aka an ex’s sweatpants that you refuse to wear.) Donating those items to be useful in someone else’s life is a great release!
